As a Training and Curriculum Specialist, you have a unique opportunity to support the communication skills of children, families, and staff. In this course you will learn about staff members’ diverse communication styles and methods. You will also learn strategies to help you maintain positive, effective communication with staff, as well as help staff understand children’s communication milestones. Improving communication with families will also be addressed.

Communication: An Introduction

Effective communication is central to success in your role as a Training & Curriculum Specialist. To help facilitate communication, you must use communication systems that meet the diverse needs and preferences of the individuals in your program. This lesson will introduce you to the concept of communication and provide an overview of different communication methods and styles.

How you communicate with staff members has a large impact on your job satisfaction, personal fulfillment, and professional relationships. This lesson will help you understand critical issues in maintaining healthy communication with staff members. It will address understanding staff members’ professional interests, listening actively, providing effective feedback, and preparing for difficult conversations.

Communication: Helping Staff Understand Language & Literacy Development from Birth to 12 Years

To communicate effectively, staff members must understand the range of ways children communicate from infancy through childhood. You can help the staff understand how communication develops in children from birth through age 12, and you can help them communicate effectively with children. This lesson will provide a brief overview of expected development, ideas about how to promote language in your program, and guidance around talking to staff members about their communication practices with children.

Communication: Families

A strong partnership between staff and families is built on good communication. Good communication skills help to make sure that (a) accurate information is shared, (b) expectations are shared, and (c) trust is established. Your role is to help staff members develop good communication skills, which are especially important when issues arise. This lesson will focus on strategies you can use to help staff members improve their communication with families.
