Adapting one’s behavior to reflect the values or norms of a particular environment or situation can be a difficult skill for school-age children to master. To support children’s learning it is important to reflect on how you use this skill in your own life.

Think of environments you are a part of on a regular basis and what kind of behavior modifications you make to reflect the values or norms of these environments. Then, consider how you learned the specific behavior. Record your thoughts in the chart below.

Public library When I enter a public library’s designated quiet zone, I turn the sound off on my cell phone. I learned in Elementary School that libraries are quiet areas. There are also signs posted in the entrance to silence electronic devices.
Friend's home When at my friend’s house, I take off my shoes upon entering even though I keep them on at home. I have observed my friend take their shoes off at others’ homes. When I first visited, I asked what they preferred.
