As you watch the video, think about the features and activities in each of the four outdoor play environments.  What do you see that is helping to keep children safe, and what do you see that may pose a danger to children? You might see fences, shade, water sources, developmentally appropriate experiences, or many other features. Use what you learned in this lesson to write a list of the features or activities, whether they are protecting or potentially harmful, and why.

1. Outdoor Play Space 1

   Feature: Mulch - How is it keeping children safe? Or what danger does it pose? If there is danger, what would you do about this space to mitigate that danger?
    

   Keeps children safe by providing a cushioned fall zone around the climber.

2. Outdoor Play Space 2

   Feature: Fence - How is it keeping children safe? Or what danger does it pose? If there is danger, what would you do about this space to mitigate that danger?
    

   Keeps children safe by providing a boundary for play; helps prevent children from leaving without an adult.

3. Outdoor Play Space 3

   Feature: Covered sandbox - How is it keeping children safe? Or what danger does it pose? If there is danger, what would you do about this space to mitigate that danger?
    

   Keeps children safe by keeping the sand free from animals and animal droppings that can pose a health risk.

4. Outdoor Play Space 4

   Feature: Park close to road without a fence - How is it keeping children safe? Or what danger does it pose? If there is danger, what would you do about this space to mitigate that danger?
    

   Could pose a danger as young children could easily run away from park area; provider could strategically choose a place to stand to supervise play in this area, remind children of the safety rules when attending this park, or bring appropriate materials and games to engage the children.
