Because you spend time in classrooms and programs on a regular basis, you have an opportunity to observe staff members as they promote creativity throughout the day. You can watch for planned and spontaneous opportunities to nurture creativity. You can use the questions to guide your observations.

Planned Opportunities:

1. What activities or experiences are described on the activity plan for promoting creativity? Consider art, science, music, movement, etc.
    
2. What was the outcome of the activity (what did children create)?
    
3. Were children given the choice to participate?
    
4. Were all children able to participate if they chose to do so? Did the staff member make any adaptations to meet individual children’s needs?
    
5. Did the staff member document the creative experiences?
    

Spontaneous Opportunities and Interactions:

1. Did the staff member ask the children open-ended questions during your observation? If so, write an example.
    
2. What kind of scaffolding did the adult provide to children to promote creativity? Did they make brief suggestions or offer ideas?
    
3. How did the staff member help children solve problems that arose? Did the they use problems as an opportunity to model problem-solving strategies?
