There are moments in our lives that help define who we are. As a school-age staff member, it is important for you to think about how your sense of self has developed so that you may support and encourage school-age children.According to Mark Ylvisaker (2006) there are seven experiences that contribute to the construction of a positive and productive sense of self. You can review these in the Learn section of this lesson. Think about experiences that have helped you develop into the person you are today. These may be defining moments (e.g., roller skating in the park on your own for the first time; an important conversation with a parent) or broader experiences (e.g., the love and affection from your grandmother; overcoming a divorce). How did having – or not having – each of these seven experiences impact your own sense of self?
