You can use these scenarios to help staff members prepare to report child abuse and neglect. Read a scenario with staff members and take the time to identify the signs that might be indicative of child abuse or neglect. Then, talk with staff members about what they might do to report their suspicions of maltreatment. Colton is a preschool-age child who has been exhibiting some challenging behavior during drop-off time since his father was deployed. One morning, you observe him hit your co-teacher and say he hates them. Your co-teacher replies, “Well I hate you too, you little brat.” Jamie, age 2, has been biting her peers lately when she wants their attention. After a recent incident, your coworker gets on Jamie’s level, grabs her arm, and bites her back. Your coworker then looks at you and says, “There, that will teach her.” Alecia, age 5, falls and hits her head hard on the sidewalk. The provider caring for her at the time sees the accident but does not acknowledge that she is upset, check on her, provide first aid, or notify her parents. Later in the day, you notice some signs of a concussion in Alecia and follow the necessary protocol. Corrinne, age 8, always asks to use the restroom multiple times during meals. Today, your co-teacher told Corrine that she was not allowed to leave the table. As a result, Corrinne had an accident, and her peers began to make fun of her. Your co-teacher told her she would have to sit in her soiled pants until the meal was over. It is 6:30pm. Jacob’s mom has not yet arrived to pick him up. Jacob’s teacher tried calling all the numbers they have for his authorized pick-ups, but no one answered. The program is supposed to be closed for the evening and the teacher has somewhere to be, so they ask Jacob to sit outside on the bench and wait for his parents, then the teacher leaves. Patrick has been refusing to clean up materials when he is finished using them. Today, your coworker asked him several times to clean up and when he refused, they took him to the back of the room and spanked him.
