Use the checklists below to see if you and the children and youth in your care are washing your hands appropriately. Remember to use this as an opportunity to encourage great hand washing from everyone in your program. Celebrate when children or adults correctly complete all seven steps and when they wash their hands at the appropriate times. Share your experiences with your trainer, coach, or fellow providers.

When to wash: *
  • When you arrive at and begin the program for the day
  • When hands are visibly dirty or soiled
    (e.g., after working in the outdoor garden)
  • Before preparing food
  • Before eating
  • After eating
  • Before handling animals
  • After handling animals
  • After using the restroom
  • After playing in sand or outdoors
  • After handling uncooked food
  • After sneezing, coughing into your hand, or blowing your nose in a tissue
  • Before and after contact with sores, cuts or scrapes
How to wash:
  1. 1. Hands completely wet in the stream of water.
  2. 2. Apply soap.
  3. 3. Lather the soap well, scrubbing all surfaces—backs of hands, wrists, between fingers, around jewelry, and under their fingernails.
  4. 4. Continue rubbing hands for at least 20 seconds.
  5. 5. Rinse hands well under running water.
  6. 6. Dry hands using a clean paper towel or use an air drier.
  7. 7. Use your towel to turn off the faucet. Then throw the towel away.

* This list is slightly shorter than the one in Lesson Two as it is tailored to include washing times applicable to both children and adults.
